About David wa Maahlamela

Poet and prose writer David wa Maahlamela hails from Mankweng in Polokwane, Limpopo. He studied both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and worked as a fitter and turner artisan at the De Beers Consolidated Mines, before resigning in his seventh year organizing a protest march.

Writing mainly in Sepedi and English, wa Maahlamela’s poetry has featured regularly for over a decade in literary journals and anthologies such as New Coin, Timbila, Carapace, Botsotso, New Contrast, Kotaz and Fidelities, and numerous others.

Wa Maahlamela has performed in various events such as the South African Literary Awards, Anglo Platinum Limpopo Achiever Awards, Northern Cape Writers festival, Polokwane Book Fair, Jozi Book Fair, Cape Town Literature conference, Durban Verses for Biko, Mpumalanga 16 Days of Activism and the ISP convention in Washington DC (USA), to mention a few.

With poetry book titles Moswarataukamariri, Mphogodiba, Poem to my Poems and Mopedi o Maratong under his name, wa Maahlamela has also written the novel Sejamoledi and the play O jelwe ke Aretse. He has also compiled and edited a Sepedi poetry anthology entitled Tša Borala and six children’s books.

Wa Maahlamela is the recipient of the Herifest Prize for Poetry, the Musina Mayoral Excellence Award for Arts development, and the 2010/2011 PanSALB Multilingualism Award. He has featured in the popular SABC 2 soapie, Muvhango, the SABC 1 series of 55 South African poets, Voice of Africa, and on SABC News International’s Youth Expression and Africa in Literature.

Wa Maahlamela is the founder of Lesedi Theatre Production, Shanduka Poetry Group and Realmen Talk Poetry concept. He has also chaired the Musina Arts Committee and served as the director of an annual arts festival.
